Bear Essentials
Capital Campaign Dear Friend of the Zoo, The Alaska Zoo looks to the future with a clear vision of providing optimal care for our animals, a pleasant experience for visitors and expanding our role as an educational institution. The Zoo is on the verge of taking some tremendous steps forward and we could use your help. We need to raise $1.35 million to complete three capital projects to better serve our animals and you. They are the new infirmary, animal commissary and the gateway complex. Please help us! I know the huge numbers can be daunting, but remember — every dollar helps. We really can’t do it without you. Thank you for your support. Sincerely,
Pat Lampi |

New Infirmary: A new infirmary will benefit every animal residing at the Alaska Zoo as well as new arrivals. The building is designed to incorporate indoor/outdoor holding areas for large animals, a wintering facility for migratory birds with a public viewing area and an isolation area for incoming animals. The examination room will be equipped with viewing windows to allow the observation of some procedures for educational purposes. The price tag for this project is $400-thousand.

Animal Commissary: Not a glamorous project, but the animal commissary is vital to the efficient and proper handling of food products coming into the Zoo. The renovated commissary will encompass storage areas for food items (dry, refrigerated and frozen), a diet preparation area and a dish cleaning area. The remodel includes new interior walls, new flooring, cabinets, larger counters and sinks. It will also add a second story to the building to be utilized as a staff locker room. This project is estimated at $350-thousand.

Gateway Complex: Help us give our education department its first permanent home with a 200-person lecture hall and 50-seat classroom with audio/visual components. This will allow the Zoo to meet the growing community demands for services and continue in its mission of providing wildlife conservation through education. The facility will also house a new admissions kiosk, gift shop and provide a safer and larger gathering point for schools, families and tour groups. We are $589-thousand away from opening this building.
